Johannes Brahms

» Academic Festival Overture« op. 80

Joseph Haydn

Cello Concerto in C-major Hob. VIIb:1

Johannes Brahms

Symphony No. 1 c-minor op. 68

  • Gautier Capuçon Violoncello
  • Gürzenich-Orchester Köln
  • James Gaffigan Conductor

“A world-class musician” is how the music journalist Matthias Siehler characterised the 34-year old cellist Gautier Capuçon, who at this concert will perform with the Gürzenich Orchestra for the third time. This time he will take on Joseph Haydn’s charming and highly virtuoso concerto in C major, which he has already recorded on CD with, as a review attests, “athletic beauty” and the “sinewy suppleness of an Olympic wrestler”. Johannes Brahms had placed his inner battle with his role model Beethoven behind him when he managed to complete his 1stSymphony in 1876 after twelve years. “The symphony grand, overwhelming,” Clara Schumann praised the result, “Particularly the last movement, with its inspired introduction, made an extraordinary impression on me.” Four years later, Brahms wrote his “Academic Festival Overture” in a surprisingly brilliant and light-hearted style. The proceeds of this benefit concert will go to the “We help” campaign of the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and the “Lufthansa HelpAlliance”. “Wir helfen e. V.”, the support association of the Cologne publishing house DuMont-Schauberg, supports projects that help children and young people from the region to have a home. Employees of “Lufthansa HelpAlliance” are engaged as volunteers in local aid programmes around the world.
