The programme for the New Year’s Concert alternates between a brilliantly sparking festive mood and powerful orchestral pathos – and in the midst of it all, the enchanting sound of a Stradivarius. Sergey Krylov is the soloist in Mendelssohn’s uncannily beautiful Violin Concerto, which took the traditional concerto form in an entirely new direction, with radiant harmonic colour and a rhapsodic narrative style.
Sergei Prokofiev, on the other hand, takes his bearings from classicism as an unflaggingly exuberant source of energy in his First Symphony, a clever look at the music of Haydn – or rather, what it would have become if Haydn had been alive at the beginning of the 20th century. Hypothesizing aside, Prokofiev’s homage to the great classicist and his famous sense of humour is simply irresistible.
Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowskys »Nutcracker« was premiered at Mariinski-Theater in 1892. Listeners will be whisked away to a romantic and highly imaginative World, full of dreams and longings.
