Unfortunately Emanuel Ax, the soloist for the upcoming Subscription Concert No. 3 and the Chamber Concert on November 7, has been forced to cancel his appearance. The pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout, has agreed to take his place. Instead of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, he will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C-minor Op. 37 in the subscription concert.
Emanuel Ax, the Gürzenich Orchestra’s artist-in-residence this season, writes: »I am so disappointed not to have the great pleasure of playing with Maestro Roth and the wonderful Gürzenich Orchestra in November. The great difficulties of travel from my home to Europe and the medical uncertainties of the pandemic are just too much for an old person like me. I have looked forward so much to these concerts, and I only hope that when spring arrives, I will have the privilege of making music in Cologne.«
We are very grateful that Kristian Bezuidenhout, a South-African-born pianist, will take over the concerts in Cologne and the subsequent guest appearance in Heerlen. We are particularly delighted that he will also perform the chamber concert on November 7 with soloists from our orchestra.
Kristian Bezuidenhout’s artistic development was shaped by historically informed performance practice; in addition to giving concerts on modern grand pianos, he also frequently performs on historical keyboard instruments. He is artistic director of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and principal guest director of The English Concert, as well as making regular guest appearances with the world’s leading ensembles, for example Les Arts Florissants, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Chicago Symphony and the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. He was artist-in-residence at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and Cologne’s Philharmonie during the 2019/20 season as well as at the 2019 Bachfest in Leipzig. He enjoys a long-standing cooperation with the label harmonia mundi, a collaboration that has earned numerous awards and distinctions.
