Statement on the terrorist attack on Israel

We are deeply shocked by the attack on Israel by the terrorist organisation Hamas. Our thoughts are with the victims of the cowardly acts of violence, with their relatives and with all those who are currently fearing for their future. Israel's security is rightly part of Germany's reason of state.

The German theatres and orchestras stand in solidarity with Israel. Nothing can justify the excesses of violence against the Israeli population. It is appalling that some people are using the current situation as an opportunity to spread anti-Semitic hatred in Germany. The current situation therefore challenges us once again to resolutely oppose anti-Semitism, misanthropy and violence in our society, to ensure the safety of Jews and to open spaces for peaceful cultural encounters.

Stefan Englert, Managing Director of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, says: »We are appalled that so many people were killed by terrorists at a festival where young people came together peacefully to listen to music and dance. Anti-Semitism must have no place in our society and equally in art and culture.«

The theatres and orchestras want to and will continue to promote togetherness in diversity and freedom in our society.
