3 questions to Alisa Weilerstein
Which role does music play in your life?
Music is and has been literally everywhere in my life! I grew up in a family of musicians, my husband is a conductor, and our daughter is an enthusiastic listener. But I also am of the firm belief that music is the highest and most direct form of communication that humans have, so I feel immensely grateful to be able to share it with others.
Which is your connection to Matthias Pintschers concerto for cello?
Zu diesem Werk habe ich eine sehr enge Verbindung. Zunächst schon allein deswegen, weil Matthias es ja für mich geschrieben hat! Acht Jahre vor der Uraufführung haben wir zum ersten Mal darüber diskutiert. Wir sind wirklich gute Freunde und Kollegen, ich mag ihn ungemein und empfinde großen Respekt für ihn als Mensch und als Künstler. Das Stück un despertar ist ausgesprochen intim und durch das gleichnamige Gedicht von Octavio Paz inspiriert. Ich stelle mir den Künstler vor, wie er in einen Spiegel blickt und vor dem erschrickt, was er darin sieht.
What did you learn about yourself through music?
I’m still learning. There’s no hiding in music, so it’s never easy!
