The Quatuor DiotimaThe name of the quartet reflects the musical double identity to which Yun-Peng Zhao (violin), Léo Marillier (violin), Franck Chevalier (viola) and Alexis Descharmes (cello) are committed: Diotima - originally a female figure from ancient Greece - is the lover of the title character in Friedrich Hölderlin's novel Hyperion (1797). A throwback to Romanticism, but also a reference to the music of our time: one of the most important contemporary works for string quartet is Luigi Nono's composition Fragmente - Stille. An Diotima (1979-80).
Accordingly, the Quatuor Diotima is an outstanding interpreter of the classical-romantic string quartet repertoire, but also passionately committed to contemporary music. In its programs, it enables a new perspective on music as art beyond time and space by merging classical and contemporary pieces: The four musicians make - according to The Strad - "music history seem like a great experiment again."
The Quatuor Diotima has already worked with the most famous composers of our time, inspiring or commissioning works by Pierre Boulez, Toshio Hosokawa, Miroslav Srnka, Alberto Posadas, Mauro Lanza, Gérard Pesson, Rebecca Saunders and Tristan Murail. Helmut Lachenmann's dance suite with Deutschlandlied (to be heard in the concerts from May 11-13) is one of the highlights of the ensemble's vast repertoire. Other focal points are the music of the Second Viennese School (the Gürzenich Orchestra will perform Arnold Schönberg's orchestral Handel adaptation with a solo string quartet in the concerts from September 22-24) as well as string quartets by Beethoven, Schubert, Bartók, Debussy, Ravel and Janáček. With Richard Strauss and Franz Schubert (May 9), the Quatuor Diotima will showcase further facets of its impressive versatility in Cologne.
Das Quatuor Diotima tritt regelmäßig in den renommiertesten Sälen und Konzertreihen der Welt auf. In Europa gastiert es in der Philharmonie de Paris, der Berliner Philharmonie, der Kölner Philharmonie oder der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg genauso wie im Wiener Konzerthaus, bei LuganoMusica, beim Círculo de Cámara Madrid oder dem Granada Festival. Auch in Japan, Taiwan und Südkorea ist das Quartett unterwegs und wird mit Uraufführungen bei den wichtigsten Festivals für zeitgenössische Musik wie Wien Modern, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, IRCAM und Musica Strasbourg gefeiert.
Die umfangreiche, vielfach preisgekrönte Diskografie des Quatuor Diotima enthält u. a. die Aufnahme aller Streichquartette von Béla Bartók, die Interpretationen des Gesamtwerks für Streichquartett der Zweiten Wiener Schule sowie die endgültige Fassung des Livre pour quatuor von Pierre Boulez. Im Jahr 2016 brachte das Quartett die »Diotima Collection« heraus, die den Werken bedeutender Komponisten unserer Zeit gewidmet ist. Anlässlich des 100.
